German stage and film actress Heli Finkenzeller (1914-1991) had her greatest successes in popular Ufa comedies of the 1930’s and 1940’s. After the war she often played mother roles.
Helene Finkenzeller was born in Munchen (Munich), Germany in 1914 (according to some sources 1911). She grew up in Munich where her parents where her parents ran a family, business which sold office furniture. As a kid she was already interested in everything connected to the theatre and she wanted to become an opera singer. After finishing school she attended a conservatory, but she soon realized that her voice was too weak for the opera stage. Instead she took acting classes from Otto Falkenberg at his newly established drama school in Munich and in 1934 she joined the Munchner Kammerspielen (Munich Chamber Plays) and for the next two years she performed there with such actors as Ferdinand Marian, Elizabeth Flickenschild, and her later husband Will Dohm. In 1935 she made her first film appearance in a supporting part in the Ufa comedy Ehestreik/Matrimonial Strike (1935, Georg Jacoby) with Paul Richter. She played her first lead for the Ufa in the comedy Weiberregiment/Petticoat Government (1936, Karl Ritter). She appeared with star comedian Heinz Ruhmann in Der Mustergatte/Model Husband (1937, Wolfgang Liebeneiner). The box office hits Opernball/Opera Ball (1939, Wolfgang Liebeneiner) with Paul Horbiger, Kohlhiesels Tochter/Kohlhiesels daughters (1943, Kurt Hoffmann) in which she played the double roles of Veronika and Annamirl Kohlhofer, and especially Das Bad auf der Tenne/The bathroom in the barn (1943, Volker von Collande) with her husband Will Dohm made her known to a large audience and became one of Germany’s most popular film stars.
After the Second World War Heli Finkenzeller continued her film career, often in mother roles. Thus she played the wife of Heinz Ruhmann in Brieftrager Muller/Postman Muller (1953, John Reinhardt) and Emil’s mother in Emil und die Detektive/Emil and the Detectives (1954, Robert A. Stemmle) based on the classic children’s book by Erich Kastner. In the German-Dutch coproduction Ciske - Ein Kind braucht Liebe/Ciske – A Child Needs Love (1955, Wolfgang Staudte) with Kees Brusse, she was the aunt of the title figure, and she was also seen in another Dutch-German coproduction Jenny (1959, Alfred Bittins, Willy van Hemert) also with Kees Brusse. On stage, she appeared in the musical Gigi at the Theater des Westens (Theater of the West) in Berlin, and in many plays. She also can be heard on records with songs and texts. From the early 1960’s on, the former Ufa star played mainly on stage and in many TV films and series, such as Unser Pauker/Our Crammer (1965, Otto Meyer) with Georg Thomalla, the comedy Meine Schwiegersohne und ich/My sons-in-law and I (1969, Rudolf Jugert) opposite Hans Sohnker, the Krimi Der Kommissar/The Commissioner (1974) starring Erik Ode, Das Traumschiff/The Dream Boat (1981, Fritz Umgelter), Der Gerichtsvollzieher/The Bailiff (1981, Peter Weck) and finally, three years before her death still in Lorentz & Sohne/Lorentz and Sons (1988, Claus Peter Witt). In between, she played in one final film, the black comedy Satansbraten/Satan’s Brew (1976, Rainer Werner Fassbinder). Heli Finkenzeller was married with fellow actor Will Dohm, with whom she had a daughter, actress Gaby Dohm (1943) who is well known in the German language countries. After Will Dohm’s death in 1948, she remarried in 1950 to film producer Alfred Bittin. They stayed together till his death in 1971. Heli Finkenzeller died from cancer in 1991 in her hometown Munich. She was 76. In an obituary the German weekly Der Spiegel wrote: “Her type was much in demand at the Ufa: charm with distance, elegance without any wickedness. She even had big world allure, but on a small Pan-German scale. It made Heli Finkenzeller in the middle of the thirties a star in light entertainment films.”

The kitchen windows
These are our kitchen windows. For years rebar mats were standing in front of them - until they were removed some time ago. Imagine my delight when I looked out of the kitchen window one morning in 2010 and saw they had returned! I didn't complain about this any more, nor move them myself - some things just never change, unless one just leaves them behind. I still find it hard to believe that the same guy who is responsible for all of this sends letters to his tenants, criticitzing the 'state of the garden you don't care for' and 'the cardboard boxes you're storing in your apartment'.
(I haven't mentioned these yet, have I? In his opinion this is the worst thing we ever did TO HIM. When we decided to move some time in the near future and thus to get rid of some stuff, we kept a few empty cardboard boxes as packages to send our things to whoever wants them. These boxes were nicely folded and stacked in the corridor, where noone but us was seeing them. One day the landlord came by and saw the boxes, and without asking he demanded us to remove them. It's not like the boxes were all over the place, it was just one single stack at one wall - and even if we had cardboard boxes instead of furniture, as long as the apartment is clean it's none of his business anyway. Especially if one considers the state the house is in. I got really mad about the whole situation, so the next time he announced a visit I collected some more boxes and made the stack even higher! Now we're almost done sending our stuff, and of course most of the boxes are gone - but I think if he wanted to stop by and take a look at the apartment, I would organize some new ones! :D)
das business furniture
Traders Guns and Money is a wickedly comic expose of the culture, games and pure deceptions played out every day in trading rooms around the world. And played out with other people's money. A sensational insider's view of the business of trading and marketing derivatives, this revised edition explains the frighteningly central role that derivatives and financial products played in the global financial crisis. This worldwide bestseller reveals the truth about derivatives: those financial tools memorably described by Warren Buffett as financial weapons of mass destruction'. Traders, Guns and Money will introduce you to the players and the practices and reveals how the real money is made and lost. The global financial crisis took almost everyone by surprise and even now new problems keep appearing and solutions continue to be elusive. In the original version of Traders, Guns and Money, Satyajit Das provided a highly prescient insight into the structure and risk of the world financial system exposing the problems that are becoming readily apparent. In a 2006 speech The Coming Credit Crash Das argued that: "an informed analysis shows that risk is not better spread but more leveraged and (arguably) more concentrated . This does not improve the overall stability and security of the financial system but exposes it to increased risk of a "crash".
